Visiting Birling Gap
Birling Gap car park has now reopened in line with government advice, so people can access fresh air, open space and nature. Due to restrictions we have been unable to offer our usual range of facilities. The information below will help you plan your visit. Please follow the usual social distancing guidelines at all times.
The car parks at Birling Gap are now open and are very busy. Pay & display parking at Birling Gap is as follows: £1.50 for up to 1 hour; £3 for up to 2 hours; £5 for more than 2 hours. Payment is by CASH ONLY - cards cannot be used. Pay by Phone is now available. Visitors should use the free WiFi which can be picked up outside the cafe, or should take a photograph of the payment details and make their payment on site when mobile access is available. National Trust members, motorcycles and Blue Badge holders park free. National Trust members should scan their membership cards at the machine and collect the ticket to display in their car. Coaches are not currently permitted to use the car parks. Pre-booking a car parking space in advance of your visit is not possible.
Our toilets have now reopened with reduced capacity. They will be closed for sanitising periodically throughout the day. There may be occasions where visitors are asked to wait a few minutes whilst the toilets are sanitised so we thank you for your patience.
Our cafe at Birling Gap has reopened and will initially be serving a reduced range of takeaway hot and cold drinks and some light snacks. We've introduced new safety measures including closure of our seating areas, screens at our tills and collections points, and waymarked one way routes. We'll also only be accepting card payments. We look forward to welcoming you back and know that you'll support us to make this a safe experience for everyone. For more information please visit our 'Refreshments at Birling Gap' article.
Overnight stays - no vehicles or tents
There is no camping permitted at Birling Gap or in any of the surrounding National Trust countryside. Motor homes & camper vans can only park in the coach bays in the main car park. Overnight camping or stays by motor vehicles are not permitted
Access to the beach is now open. We’re asking everyone to follow government guidance to support social distancing and this also applies when using the steps to visit the beach..
Barbecues & fires
Barbecues and fires are not permitted anywhere on National Trust property. They cause damage to our valuable grasslands and are also a wider fire risk. Please help us keep our countryside sites safe and free from damage by following this rule at all times.
There is a drinking water fountain located on the outside wall of the cafe.

We hope you enjoy your visit and please remember the followig:
- Stay local if you can – some of our houses and gardens remain closed. We are opening up countryside car parks gradually, but many facilities will not yet be open. It's important we don't create hotspots.
- Take extra care to respect local residents and other visitors. Please don’t park on roadsides, as this can block essential emergency access.
- By sticking to paths, keeping dogs under control, not approaching wildlife and taking any litter home, we can ensure our places benefit both people and nature.
