Christmas at Ightham Mote
From Monday 30 October, through to Monday 1 January, the ground floor of the house is the focus for Queen Palmer’s Victorian Christmas, combining her idea of the quintessentially English with her American traditions.
The Great Hall fire is lit, the table is laid, and the presents are under the tree ready to welcome her husband, General William Jackson Palmer back from his railroad work in America and Mexico.
With the help of her servants, and the village inn-keeper, the Palmers will be entertaining their friends from the aesthetic circle including Ellen Terry and Henry James.
Upstairs, you can see John Singer Sargent’s paintings of ‘Elsie Palmer, A Young Lady in White’ and ‘A Game of Bowls’. You will also learn more about Queen Palmer and the Aesthetic Circle.
Please note: only the downstairs and some of the upstairs is open to allow for conservation.
2 - 3 December, 10am - 3pm
Father Christmas is visiting us and will be handing out little gifts to good children, and there will be local produce stalls to get those Christmas gifts. Festive music will resonate throughout the rooms to add to the atmosphere.
Normal admission applies.
