Re-Imagining The Workhouse, a Wellcome success

Firbeck in the early 20th century

Wellcome has gifted a grant of £365,000 to The Workhouse to support the Re-Imagining project.

Through the ‘Re-Imagining The Workhouse’ project, we aim to engage supporters with the powerful story of how society has addressed issues of social welfare, education and health care since the Victorian times.Wellcome’s grant will support the revitalisation of the site’s old infirmary building Firbeck House, allowing visitors full access for the first time since the National Trust acquired The Workhouse twenty years ago.

You will be able to get involved with our new interactive interpretation within Firbeck House and The Workhouse itself, which will encourage supporters to reflect and question on how these topical issues have been tackled historically, whilst making contemporary links with the challenges of today.

Work on Firbeck House is anticipated to start in autumn this year, and expected to open by spring 2019.
