Montacute House Sings

The magic of Christmas will be audible at Montacute House this winter, with traditional carols being heard around the grounds. An all-new festive experience places local community choirs and traditional carols at the heart of Christmas with Montacute House Sings, which is running from 29 November to 1 January (except Christmas Eve and Christmas Day).

Carols, such as O Come All Ye Faithfull and We Wish You A Merry Christmas, were specially recorded by five local choirs conducted by Somerset-born Musical Director and Conductor, Chris Grabham.  The choirs are local to Montacute House itself with the closest being based in the village of Montacute, All Saints Primary School choir and the Montacute Village Voices. The others that have lent their voices are:

  • Ilminster Community Choir - a choir of all ages and abilities, who sing for pleasure and enjoyment

  • Harmony 303 Community Choir - a group that shares the love of acapella harmony singing and the strong sense of community that singing in a choir can create.

  • Somer Singers, Somerton - a four-part harmony group who sing unaccompanied arrangements in ‘a cappella’ style

Throughout December visitors will then encounter the recorded songs as they stroll around the grounds; all in different locations and each with a festive backdrop inspired by the carols and motifs from the architecture of Montacute House. Hidden in each backdrop will be a White Hart stag for visitors to spot.

The Great Hall on the ground floor of the house will be decorated with a beautiful 15-foot Christmas tree. Down at the Stables block, you can warm yourself by the braziers and there is an opportunity for a fun Christmas photo. Leave your Christmas wish on the wishing tree and hopefully it will come true. In the Courtyard Café, edible treats like mince pies and mulled wine will be available.
