A fairly flat walk from the old village of Shapwick along tracks and droves including the Kingston Lacy Beech Avenue. The walk is waymarked as Walk 6.

Start:

Adjacent to St Bartholomew’s Church, Shapwick village, grid ref: ST937017

Return to the village centre at Shapwick Cross, crossing over into the High Street past the Anchor Inn. Continue up through the village passing picturesque cottages which survived the great fire in 1881; turning right into Park Lane opposite Priory House.

This quiet country road takes you past Higher Dairy, a derelict chalk pit on the left and New Barn Farm. Shortly after, at the junction, cross the road and walk straight down the track to join the bridleway Sweetbrier Drove.

The walk continues for a short distance before turning left into another drove, Summer Hayes. A good view of the Beech Avenue and Badbury Rings is obtained on this undulating sector of the route.

Reaching the Beech Avenue, turn left and follow the avenue of trees for a little over 1.5 miles (2.4km). The old beech trees, planted in 1835, will eventually be mirrored by new hornbeam trees.

Turn left into the drove of Swan Way. Adjacent to Swan Way Cottage is an enclosure (ST94670312) containing Straw Barrow, an important Bronze Age burial mound.

At the bottom of Swan Way turn right by Elm Tree Cottage and pass through a gate onto Ram Lane. This is an ancient route ‘by-passing’ the village of Shapwick. When reaching the road turn left and proceed back to the village centre and car park, passing the impressive buildings of Bishops Court Farm House.

Terrain

Walkers can encounter traffic through the village and afterwards on Park Lane. At the end of the walk there is a short section on the road having left Ram Lane. The tracks are grass and gravel.

By road

From Blandford: Take the B3082 towards Wimborne. In the middle of the Kingston Lacy Beech Avenue, with Badbury Rings car park on the left, turn right to Shapwick. Continue down this road to the Shapwick Cross cross road and go straight ahead and park by the car park adjacent to the church. Distance approximately 5.5 miles (8.8km).

From Wimborne: Take the B3082 towards Blandford. In the middle of the Kingston Lacy Beech Avenue, with Badbury Rings car park on the right, turn left to Shapwick. Continue down this road to the Shapwick Cross cross road and go straight ahead and park by the car park adjacent to the church. Distance approximately 5.4 miles (8.7km).
