Exhibition at the Stableyard Gallery: 'Genius Loci' by Tom Spooner
This exhibition is a free event and runs from Monday 14 May to Sunday 3 June. Open daily from 10am to 4pm.
About the exhibition
Illustrator Tom Spooner says of his exhibition: “Based on evening walks in my native southwest London, and further afield, in some of the marginal landscapes of southern England, these prints grew out of an interest in the superficially unremarkable. They reflect a move towards disclosing the poetic dimensions of the quotidian and reimagining familiar landscapes of everyday routine as sites of possibility, uncertainty and becoming”. He says they are poetic images, which enable us to reimagine the nature of things, drawing bridges between the empirical and the imaginative, and self and other.
Tom draws primarily from photographs he has taken. He finds the static, framed nature of the completed works useful for crystalizing the otherwise fleeting moments of acute self-consciousness and reverie which inspired them.
Though the drawings are individual works, together they depict a journey in which horizons lead to new encounters and an awareness of the passing of time. Tom found the atmosphere of the places he depicted in these prints most magical at dusk and wanted to capture a sense of enclosing darkness and the possibility of new beginnings brought by the dawn of a new day.
The completed works started life as a series of drypoint plates. Through experimenting with layers of pigment in the printing process, Tom's work can also be likened to the process of monoprinting in which no two prints are exactly identical. The raw, tactile nature of the ink, and the almost archaic appearance of the physical prints, Tom believes, complement their subject matter.
