And you can’t have a festival without food and drink. Enjoy having your taste buds tantalised with a wide variety of tasty treats.
Free flow visits to the mansion house, 11am – 4.30pm on Saturday and Sunday
In line with the theme of Europe during the Conversations Festival this year, the house is pleased to showcase how our place, our history and our Collection have been shaped by European influences throughout the centuries.
Why not come inside and enjoy a building completed in the neo-classical style; Be greeted at the entrance by a vast portrait entitled Circe and the Sirens, and learn how Lady Londonderry turned to Greek mythology to create her alter ego; take in the perfect symmetry of the Central Hall, a room festooned with marble statues of Venus, Eurydice, Apollino, Narcissus and Adonis; Hear of the family’s important role in the Congress of Vienna of 1815, and enjoy seeing relevant pieces from our International Collection including the Congress Desk, the Congress chairs, Helen of Troy by Antonio Canova, and gold candlesticks presented to the family by Pope Pius VII.
Be entranced by the many portraits of the family by the Hungarian artist Philip de Laszlo; Learn of the family’s close friendship with the Tsar of Russia; Visit the capital cities of Europe as you meander along the bedroom corridors; and hear of how Lady Londonderry researched the great gardens of Italy to create her horticultural masterpiece here at Mount Stewart in the 1920’s.
