We've been putting the finishing touches to our painted characters today. Meanwhile, the shop have taken delivery of fresh wreaths and potted Christmas trees. Volunteers are busy making decorations and setting out tables and chairs in the courtyard, where you're be able to sit and have a hot drink when you visit the gallery over the coming weeks.
Getting ready for Christmas

Christmas at Nymans
Saturday 2 December - Tuesday 2 January 11am - 3.30pm
We know that the Messel family had a long tradition of giving books at Christmas. Maud and Leonard Messel, who inherited Nymans in 1915, gave Chistmas gifts of books to their estate workers' children and during the second world war to evacuees who were staying at Nymans. Books were also exchanged as Christmas presents between members of the Messel family and we have a mumber in our collection with inscriptions.
Among the large collection of children's books were a number of nursery rhyme books. Imagery and illustrations from these books are beautiful examples of the golden age of illustration. Taking this as our inspiration for Christmas, we have decorated Nymans throughout with a nursery rhyme theme.
We'll have decorated Christmas trees, a children's trail through the winter garden and an exhibition in the gallery: 'Sing a Song for Sixpence'. Look out for nursery rhyme inspired choices on the menu and a fabulous selection of festive food and gifts in the shop.

Christmas stock launches in the shop
From Christmas decorations and artisan gifts to traditional hampers and Christmas jams and chutneys, the shop is now fully stocked with loads of fantastic festive treats. We particularly like the toffee cobnut sauce and can recommend it poured over a steamed pudding just in time for the cold winter weather headed our way. The hand made chocolates and popcorn are an imaginative stocking filler too - we especially like the marmite flavoured popcorn.
