Christmas at Powis Castle

A Christmas tree in the Blue Drawing Room at Powis Castle, Powys, Wales

Christmas at Powis Castle & Garden will be a little different this year. The garden will be open for visitors to enjoy with a seasonal trail available for families and the castle’s State Rooms will also be dressed for a magical Christmas. Both will be open daily from 4-30 December (closed 24-26 December). However, like many charities, we're facing unprecedented challenges due to the Coronavirus pandemic and have taken the decision to postpone our Christmas illuminations this year and we won’t be hosting our Father Christmas Grotto.

This Christmas is all about ornate decorations in the Castle, wintry walks, warming cups of hot chocolate, Christmas shopping, oh and let's not forget Percy the Park Keeper’s winter wander trail.

The nights are drawing in, the temperature is dropping, and Christmas is just around the corner. It’s time to get into the festive spirit and there’s no better way than by visiting Powis Castle and Garden.

See the What’s On section of our website  for the latest information about winter activities at Powis.

See the Castle sparkle

Step into the castle and see our State Rooms decked out in all the splendour of a traditional Christmas. From ornately dressed trees and lavish decorations glinting beneath the golden light of chandeliers, to a winter wonderland scene on the Long Gallery, there’s plenty to add some sparkle to your Christmas.

If you’re visiting with children, see how many ‘Elf mice’ you can find carrying tiny presents through the rooms. Shhh, if you’re very quiet you might even spot some of them hosting their own Christmas party!

Please note:  at busy times we may need to limit visits to the castle. Please be prepared to queue outside the castle for entry. In line with government guidance, you're required to wear a face covering in most indoor spaces, please bring one with you.

Percy the Park Keeper’s winter wander trail

Embark on Percy the Park Keeper’s winter wander trail through the garden at Powis Castle from 4-23 and 27-30 December and 1-5 January 10am-4pm (last entry 3pm). Join in the fun with Percy and his animal friends and give nature a helping hand.

It’s a busy time of year for Percy the Park Keeper so pull on your wellies and become his helper for the day. Follow the clues with a note from Percy to help you find your way, and have a go at some winter tasks, activities and games.

Each trail costs £2 and includes a prize at the end plus a chance to capture your experience of the day. Percy the Park Keeper’s winter wander trail is held within the garden where normal admission prices apply.

Winter walks

Pull on your winter woollies and blow away the winter cobwebs with a stroll along the Top Terrace, through the Edwardian Formal Garden or amongst the trees in the Wilderness, our formal woodland.

Take in the breath-taking view across the Severn valley, admire ancient yews glittering with fairy lights, and explore 17th century Italianate terraces; they’re at their most magical with a fine dusting of winter frost.

Our garden is open 10am-4pm (closed 24-26 and 31 December).
