Fighting Back: Part Two Box Blight
Six weeks into Phase 2 of our Box Blight Action Plan and the digger has been brought in...
We are 6 weeks into the second phase of our Box Blight project and work is progressing well. If you have visited Ickworth during this time you will have noticed the gardens are looking somewhat different to how they used to.
The first job was to cut down the box hedging to stump level all the way along the avenues and around the Temple garden and Urn. Wood of around 2 inches in thickness and bigger was saved and sold at our annual Wood Fair.
With the hedges gone, new perspectives have opened up in the garden and areas are being seen in a new light, with new opportunities for the garden to re-develop with more suitable planting schemes.
We were then left with the roots, which is where our mini digger came in and made light work of pulling them out. These have been piled up to rot down gradually.
Over the next few weeks, the digger will carry on taking out the stumps and then take out some of the soil and create a trench ready for fresh soil, compost and grit to go in before the Yew trees are planted. Fresh edging will be put down and the pathway reinstated.
You can still help us in our project, by sponsoring one of our Yew trees which will be planted this winter, and be a part of the next stage of our gardens development. Download a donation form today Grow our Gardens - Sponsor a Yew (PDF / 0.8125MB) download or talk to a member of staff at Ickworth
