Widowers' Houses

Slum landlords, making their fortunes by exploiting their impoverished tenants, are Shaw's targets for this chillingly contemporary play. You're going to laugh and squirm at the same time....

  • Booking essential

Shaw said of this play that "nobody will find it a beautiful or lovable work.....the author .. is dragging up to the smooth surface of "respectability" a handful of the slime and foulness of its polluted bed, and playing off your laughter at the scandal of the exposure against your shudder at its blackness". Frequently compared to works by Ibsen, whom Shaw greatly admired, this early play draws on his own experiences of rent-collecting as a young man in Dublin's slums.
