A whole farm approach in the Shropshire Hills

Carding Mill Valley in the Shropshire Hills AONB

This project aims to test and trial an approach for working with farmers that demonstrates how a healthy natural environment can contribute to profitable farm businesses.

We're working with small groups of farmers to prepare whole farm plans that integrate environmental management and the delivery of public goods with the core farm business. With Defra a key partner in the project, our findings will help shape future farming policy.

Objectives of the project

  • To compile a package of environmental baseline data to enable farmers and advisors to make informed choices for land management and the future of their farm business;
  • To develop a Sustainable Land Management framework to help farmers assess opportunities for the delivery of environmental outcomes and to identify options for the future of the farm business;
  • To test the Sustainable Land Management framework with a cluster of farmers leading to the production of whole farm plans;
  • To assess the impact of the whole farm planning process (and facilitated farmer cluster approach) on farmers' experience of environmental management;
  • To trial the Sustainable Land Management framework and whole farm plan approach with a further group of land managers.
