Walking in the woods
Hembury and Holne Woods are both on the River Dart, but very different woodlands
This ancient woodland has lots to offer. Walking alongside the river, you will be able to see old mine adits and workings from times gone by. There are salmon and trout in the river, and a large variety of birds to be seen.
Hembury Hillfort (a scheduled ancient monument) is set inside an Iron Age enclosure at the height of the woods. In prehistoric times it would have had wide views across the surrounding countryside.
A network of paths take you up from the river to the top of the woods, so you can have a gentle stroll or a more strenuous walk, whichever takes your fancy.
An ancient oak woodland, the trees dripping with lichens and moss covered boulders - just like walking through the fairytale land of The Hobbit.
