Autumn and half-term adventures for the kids in the Lake District

There’s no guessing that autumn is one of our favourite seasons in the Lake District. The views and colours are spectacular, which makes for perfect outdoor adventures with the kids. If you’ve had your wellies on a lot though, we’ve loads of ideas to keep the little ones entertained inside. Check out all the half-term Hallowe’en activities too. Besom making and pumpkin carving are firm favourites!

Aira Force in Ullswater Cumbria

Aira Force

Whilst being the best time of year to see the waterfall in full flow, it’s also perfect for 50 things to do before you’re 11 ¾. Pay a visit to the mini-beast hotel (we dare you - it’s teeming with creepy crawlies), play pooh sticks on our five bridges, or skim a stone on the pebble beach at Aira Green.

Woodland at Allan Bank in Grasmere

Allan Bank

We could while away the days at Allan Bank sitting by the window, spotting red squirrels and playing board games. At this time of year the woodland is great too – it’s teaming with colour and it will soon be taken over by spooky pumpkins (don't forget to check inside the spine-tingling tunnel too).

Wordsworth House & Garden

Become a bug hunter or an explorer for the day, just like Beatrix Potter or William Wordsworth. Hunt for bugs in the garden, or delve into the nooks and crannies of this intriguing house with the help of a family explorer bag.

Explore the outdoors at Sizergh

Try your hand at pumpkin carving in our great barn – will you make a witch, broomstick, ghost or ghoul? Join up with a visit to the wild play trail and that’s a full day out for all the family!

Family carving pumpkin at Wray Castle

Wray Castle

We’re decorating a giant spooky spider and web and you can drop into one of the craft sessions to help us. We all like eight legged friends, right? Besom making is also a family favourite – join us in half term, but remember to book your place with our rangers.

The autumn light over Langdale and Sticklebarn.

A great place for families, as it isn’t a traditional pub experience. It’s a National Trust pub and we do things a little differently here; with fire pits, blankets, board games, free spooky film screenings, evening bat walks with the Rangers and hearty campfire food. Also, don’t forget the pooch!

Wicker baskets of apples on red tiled floor

Acorn Bank

Try your hand at every apple game you can think of at our annual apple extravaganza – it’s a must come along! We’ve also lots of spooky family woodland trails during Hallowe’en.

Autumn colours in Borrowdale, Lake District

To celebrate 150 years since her birth, you can stand in Beatrix Potter’s footsteps with a new temporary installation of her drawings in Borrowdale this autumn. It’s one for the parents, but we know the kids will love to come along for the outdoor adventure, and perhaps have a go at some colouring after!

Wasdale in Autumn

If you’re after a sense of peace with your own outdoor adventure, Autumn is a great time to visit Wasdale. The summer crowds have melted away and you can almost have the spectacular high fells to yourselves.
