Walking in Yorkshire

Whether you fancy a gentle stroll or refreshing hike, there are lots of different walking routes across Yorkshire to suite all abilities. Wander beneath dappled sunlight in woodland, walk among wild flowers or explore moorland and fells with far-reaching views. Here are some of our favourite summer walks:

Boots, gaiters and vistas walk, Fountains Abbey, Yorkshire  

Spend a couple of hours wandering along the boundary of the Fountains Abbey estate and enjoy fantastic views of the sunlit abbey ruins. The walk will take you through the deer park and the 18th-century water garden, before reaching the abbey itself. Take in views over Ripon Cathedral and, on a clear day, you'll spot the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors, Sutton Bank and the White Horse in the distance.

Moorland walks across Marsden Moor 

Marsden Moor is criss-crossed with footpaths. From gentle strolls to challenging full day hikes, there's something to suit all abilities and it's also the perfect place to escape the crowds.

Nostell's Obelisk Walk, Yorkshire  

Take a stroll to the historic Obelisk Lodge, which was once the main entrance to Nostell, and explore the parkland in the summer sun. Meander through pockets of ancient woodlands, traditional grazing pastures and wildflower meadows, which are awash with colour and full of dragonflies, butterflies and bees in summer.

Walking at Hardcastle Crags 

There are over 15 miles of footpaths to explore in this woodland valley. A walker's paradise, grab your walking boots and discover tumbling streams, deep ravines and ragged rocks on a walk around Hardcastle Crags.

Beningbrough Hall river walk 

Follow this circular walk with sweeping views across the parkland down towards the river Ouse. There are views of the hall in the distance as you take in the river, woodlands and the wider estate.

Follow this circular walk to discover England's highest lime-rich lake, home to a unique community of rare plants and animals. As you walk across the moorland uplands, look out for hay meadows, remnants of 18th century industry and awe-inspiring views.
