Christopher Bacon printing from a Bewick block

Whether you're looking for the perfect gift or you'd like to treat yourself, we have a suggestion. How about an exclusive print produced from a hand-engraved wooden block created by 18th century artist Thomas Bewick?

The National Trust have taken the blocks out of hiding to use them for printing once more, some of which haven't been used for this purpose for twenty years.

Bewick is thought to have hand-engraved the blocks during the late 18th Century from box wood and went on to produce many more throughout his lifetime. He achieved national celebrity during the Georgian era and is still recognised to this day as one of the North East’s greatest artist.

They were originally used in successive editions of A General History of Quadrupeds, first published in 1790, a History of British Birds (1797), and Bewick’s book The Fables of Aesop and Others, which came out in 1818.

Prints cost £50 each (unframed).
