Explorer backpacks (self led)

There’s so much to discover in the formal gardens, whether it’s new life growing in the flower beds or burrowing insects in wet weather.

  • Booking not needed
  • Free event (admission applies)

These backpacks are designed to help young explorers get closer to the natural world and include useful tools to use around the gardens on your adventures.

Explorer backpacks contain a pair of binoculars, a compass, a magnifying glass, insect observation equipment and a seasonal spotter book. There’s also a storybook to read when you’re taking a break from your discoveries.

Feel free to use these backpacks for the duration of your visit, before returning them to visitor reception.

Backpacks are available on a first come, first served basis.

What is Gift Aid?

Most of our places run the Gift Aid on Entry scheme at their admission points.

Under this scheme, if you're not a member you have the choice of two entry tickets:

  • Gift Aid Admission
  • Standard Admission

If the place runs Gift Aid on Entry, we'll offer you a clear choice between the Gift Aid Admission prices and the Standard Admission prices at the admission point. It's entirely up to you which ticket you choose.

Gift Aid Admission includes a 10 per cent or more voluntary donation. Gift Aid Admissions let us reclaim tax on the whole amount paid - an extra 25 per cent - potentially a very significant boost to our places' funds.

An extra £1 paid under the scheme can be worth over £3 to the National Trust as shown below:

  Gift Aid Standard
Amount paid by visitor £11.00 £10.00
Tax refund from Government* £2.75 £0.00
Total received by the National Trust £13.75 £10.00

Please note...

You no longer need to book to visit us.

The parkland is free for everyone to enjoy, and includes an ornamental lake, woodland and vast open space to explore. Please check our park safety tips on our parkland page to ensure a worry-free visit. There is a 24-hour pedestrian exit.

Dogs are welcome everywhere except the mansion house, which allows assistance dogs only.
