Heritage Open Day - Wanstone behind the scenes

Have a guided tour of the newly-uncovered remains of one of Britain's cross-channel guns

  • Booking not needed
  • Free event (admission applies)

In July 2022, the remains of one of the cross-channel guns, nicknamed 'Jane', were uncovered at Wanstone, near Dover, Kent. Part of the largest gun battery ever built in Britain, Jane could fire a 1980 lb shell 26 miles. Join our team of volunteers on Thursday 15 September and Sunday 18 September for a tour of the spectacular gun site, magazine and the D2 Battle of Britain heavy anti-aircraft battery, which have laid hidden since the 1950s.

What is Gift Aid?

Most of our places run the Gift Aid on Entry scheme at their admission points.

Under this scheme, if you're not a member you have the choice of two entry tickets:

  • Gift Aid Admission
  • Standard Admission

If the place runs Gift Aid on Entry, we'll offer you a clear choice between the Gift Aid Admission prices and the Standard Admission prices at the admission point. It's entirely up to you which ticket you choose.

Gift Aid Admission includes a 10 per cent or more voluntary donation. Gift Aid Admissions let us reclaim tax on the whole amount paid - an extra 25 per cent - potentially a very significant boost to our places' funds.

An extra £1 paid under the scheme can be worth over £3 to the National Trust as shown below:

  Gift Aid Standard
Amount paid by visitor £11.00 £10.00
Tax refund from Government* £2.75 £0.00
Total received by the National Trust £13.75 £10.00

The basics

Suitability
Supervised children are welcome
Meeting point
We'll be opening our overflow car park at Wanstone, approximately 300 metres from the gun site. Entrance from Upper Road at postcode CT15 6HY - What3words location ///fidelity.book.approve
What to bring and wear
The site is uneven and some paths are unmade and slippery when wet, so please wear stout footwear. The location is exposed - please dress appropriately.
Accessibility
The site is relatively level with gentle slopes. The car park and the path from the car park to the site is cut grass. There is a ramp from the gun site up to the D2 battery, but once in D2, the site has concrete roads. Most of the site should be suitable for wheelchair users. A few of the D2 buildings will not be accessible due to steep steps and narrow entrances.
Other
The car park is approximately 2 km north/west of the main White Cliffs car park. Both car park and access routes to the site will be clearly advertised on the open days, Admission to the site is free, normal car parking charges apply. The nearest facilities are at South Foreland Lighthouse, approximately 1 km walk from the site. These will be the last scheduled open days for 2022 - there will be more in 2023. Meanwhile, you can keep in touch with the project on the White Cliffs of Dover Facebook page and on our web page: https://bit.ly/3cypq6I - why not bookmark our page now?
