How you can get more from your membership
As a National Trust member, you can make yourself at home – whether you’ve got a few hours or a few days to spare, or just fancy a change of scenery. So rather than saving your visits for special occasions, why not try some of these ideas to make the most out of membership?
In less than an hour
Take your dog for a walk. Rather than doing the same old loop, why not take your dog somewhere a little special? The dog will appreciate having a new place to explore (not to mention all those exciting new smells!) while you get to discover a beautiful landscape.
Shop sustainably. Our shops are full of delicious, sustainable food. Not to mention lovingly made gifts for those special occasions inspired by some of our places. Some of the places we look after also hold regular farmers' markets and craft fairs, where you can pick up wonderful local produce and show your support for small producers.
Exercise in the great outdoors. The places we look after are full of inspiring routes for your weekly jog, run or cycle. With views of historic buildings and natural beauty around every turn and plenty of new activities to try, you can keep fit and healthy. Who knows, it might even save you a few pennies on that gym membership.
Between one and two hours
Enjoy afternoon tea and cake. Many of our cafés and tearooms are set in spectacular locations. Come rain or shine, they’re perfect for an afternoon treat with friends or family. Our famous cakes and bakes aren’t half bad either!
Have an afterschool adventure. You’ll find unbelievable climbing trees, natural play areas, wilderness activities and lots more to keep your children entertained at the places we look after. To make sure you’ve always got an idea up your sleeve, you can also check out our ‘50 things to do before you’re 11 ¾’ website and app – they’re full of activities for budding adventurers.
Pack a picnic. You bring the food, we’ll provide the view. Whether it’s a romantic treat, a get-together with friends, or a family meal with a difference, we look after lots of picturesque spots where you can lay your blanket.
Two hours or more
Get your creative juices flowing. If you enjoy painting, photography or drawing, you’re welcome to spend as long as you want capturing the beautiful buildings and landscapes we look after. You’ll be in good company too – artists as diverse as JMW Turner and Beatrix Potter have been inspired by the places we now look after.
Have an evening out. We host open-air theatre productions, live music concerts and even craft beer festivals in the places we look after. Why not bring a picnic and make an evening of it?
Dig up some local history. It’s hard to unravel all the history of a place in just one trip. So why not become a regular and dig up all the incredible events and characters that make a place special?
A few days or more
Go on a ‘place hopping’ holiday. From medieval castles to cliffs teeming with seabirds, forgotten gold mines to world-famous gardens, there are hundreds of different places for you to discover. So why not enjoy a holiday to remember? And, if you stay in one of our holiday cottages, you can explore these incredible places and stories that make up our nation’s heritage in a unique home from home.
