Holiday cottages essential information
Please take the time to read this information so that you can prepare for your holiday with us. It contains details of the facilities available and possible restrictions you may encounter at your cottage. Most of our cottages have a car parking space(s) close-by, but at some you may need to carry your luggage a short distance. Some cottages also have steep or irregular steps and footpaths to the front door, which are an essential part of the character of the property. Others are in secluded locations and can only be reached by driving down an un-made track. If you’re worried about access, please check with the Holidays team. On request, we may be able to provide a more detailed layout description known as an access statement.
For information on our properties which are 'good for accessibility' please refer to page 8 of the 2017 Brochure. Deaf or hard of hearing visitors can have a fire alarm provided which triggers a vibration on capturing the sound of the main alarm. Please let us know in advance of any members of your party who are disabled or require this facility.
Arrival and departure
Please arrive at your holiday cottage after 3.30pm, as this allows us time to get your cottage ready before you arrive. Departure time is 10am, Monday to Saturday. Most of our cottages benefit from a later Sunday checkout of either 12pm or 4pm, please check your booking confirmation for full details Please leave the cottage clean, tidy and as you found it.
Outdoor living is a large part of a holiday experience and so we’re trying to provide space for barbeques at our cottages wherever possible. Some cottages have them available but many don't. Please only use a barbeque if it is provided at your cottage. The age and structure of our cottages simply makes them too much of a fire hazard.
All of our cottages are self catering; however you will find some basic starter supplies to help you on your first day. There will be a limited supply of lavatory paper, washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets (where the cottage has a dishwasher) and a cleaning agent for the bathroom and kitchen. As far as possible, the cleaning products are environmentally friendly and we hope that you will do the same. Please call the team if there is anything missing. In most cottages there will also be milk in the fridge. You will however be required to bring all further supplies for your stay. Not every cottage will have garden furniture provided however where garden furniture is supplied, it will be conventional rather than sun loungers or recliners.
If you bring your bicycles and/or sports equipment (e.g kayak), please store them outside your cottage. We know people can be very protective of their bikes, but our buildings have to take priority. Some of our properties benefit from designated outside storage areas, please ask the Holidays Team for more information.
Families and children
Most of our holiday properties are siutable for children under normal supervision, if there are any restrictions at your cottage, we will let you know when booking. We have indicated properties which will have a cot - this will be a travel cot, and a high chair will also be included. Both are provided free of charge, however no bedding, linen or towels are provided for cots so you'll need to provide your own as well as rubber under-sheets for young children using the beds. A cot may only be occupied by a child aged 24 months or less.
On arrival please familiarise yourself with all exit routes and the fire safety information specific to the property found in the welcome folder. Guidance is provided regarding the appropriate use of any wood burner or open fire if this is applicable to the property. Fireworks, Chinese lanterns, naked flames and candles are not permitted inside or outside the cottage at any time due to the significant fire risk.
Staying in a characterful and historic property is a wonderful experience, however there are a few things to consider. Plumbing and heating systems are often sensitive and are less efficient than in a modern home. More information will be provided in the welcome folder at the cottage or please contact us if you need help during your stay. Please don't move furniture during your stay as it can cause damage to the furniture itself and the property.
Our priority is peace of mind and a relaxing holiday for you and your family, so we strongly advise that you take out appropriate travel insurance for the duration of your stay.
Linen and towels
Linen is included in the rental price of most of our cottages. This will include pillowcases, bottom sheet and duvet cover, one bath and one hand towel per person, a bathmat, an oven cloth and several tea towels. We don’t provide teacosies, aprons and oven gloves. A hand towel will be provided in the kitchen. Towels will not be provided for swimming or beach use. Unfortunately in a very few cottages, we can’t provide linen at all (for operational reasons) and you’ll need to bring your own. We'll let you know if this is the case at time of booking.
All National Trust Holiday Cottages are non-smoking areas.
Dogs are welcome in lots of our cottages (at no extra charge) and these are indicated and clearly displayed in the cottage details. Unfortunately no other pets are allowed.(Please see clause 7.7 of our Terms and Conditions.) Please ensure that you inform us when you book if you are taking your dog(s). Dogs are welcome on the ground floor of any dog friendly property but should not be allowed on any furniture or bedding. Although we welcome dogs at many of our cottages, not all of the cottage gardens are dog-proof, or fully enclosed, so please ensure they are supervised whilst outside. We ask guests to please clear up in the garden after their dog before leaving the cottage. Assistance dogs are allowed at any property – please tell the team when you book if you plan to take a dog.
Due to the rural and isolated nature of some cottages, there can be limited or no mobile phone signal available and we recommend that you check with your mobile provider. If you’re concerned about being contactable at your cottage (for health reasons, for example) please make the team aware when booking so they can discuss options with you.
We always try to accurately reflect our cottages in our photographs but we do regularly repaint our cottages and replace or update furniture within them. It’s not always possible to update every photograph or notify customers of every change but we do review all our photography on a regular basis.
Many of our cottages have free WiFi available which can be checked on the holiday cottages pages on our website or by calling the Holidays Team. This free service is provided by BT and the guidance in the property welcome folder will help support you to troubleshoot any connectivity issues. We ask that you do not turn of or unplug the equipment as this may affect neighbouring guests and may trigger an engineer to visit.
