Trail running in the Somerset countryside

Tuck into a selection of tasty trail-running options offered by the Cheddar Challenge, as part of SWOF this year. A wide range of courses are available, from the full-on, off-road marathon, half-marathon, 10km, 6km and 3km distances, and a 1km race for juniors.

The routes run around Cheddar’s jaw-dropping gorge and extend out into the magical Mendip Hills. Parking is on the SWOF site, close to the start/finish line, where you’ll also find the festival village complete with full facilities, plus excellent food and drink, and entertainment. Everyone who enters a race gains entry to the festival for the day.

SWOF Cheddar Challenge Trail Marathon
Cost: £38–£40 (UK Athletics affiliated/unaffiliated)
Description: Tough but rewarding race featuring 42km (26 miles) of worldclass trail running around the iconic scenery of Cheddar Gorge and across the magical Mendip Hills. The two-lap course passes the festival hub at the midway point, offering spectators the chance to see and support runners several times, and takes competitors along a rich mix of wonderful woodland singletrack, over evocative moorland and across dramatic cliffs directly above the world-famous gorge.

Date and time: 10 September 2017, 10am
Addition information: At 42km (26 miles) in length and almost entirely off-road, this event will primarily attract intermediate and experienced trail runners. To take it on, you will need a reasonably good level of fitness, but you don't need to be superhuman. Perfect for people looking for a proper challenge. We expect the frontrunners to nail this route in less than 3 hours, while others will be out there for twice that amount of time. Everyone will come back with a story and long-lasting memory. Minimum age 18.

SWOF Cheddar Challenge Trail Half-Marathon
Cost: £27–£29 (Affiliated/Unaffiliated)
Description: This 21km (13-mile) race offers the perfect distance for trail runners looking for a serious challenge, who don't want to commit to a full trail marathon. The route retains all the super-scenic qualities of the marathon without the leg-busting distance, as it traces the lip of Cheddar Gorge and runs across the Mendip Hills. Expect a rich mix of cliff-hugging trails, wonderful woodland singletrack and evocative moorland.

Addition information: One loop of the marathon route, this event will attract everyone from experienced trail bounders to people setting themselves a goal for their first off-road running event. It will challenge all who take part, but is guaranteed to leave you smiling at the end, with a head full of memories and an itch to explore more trails in this glorious part of the world. Minimum age 18.

SWOF Cheddar Challenge Trail Run – 10km
Cost: £16–£18 (Affiliated/Unaffiliated)
Description: This 10km (6-mile) race offers a tempting taste of the worldclass running trails the Mendips offer, skirting iconic Cheddar Gorge before following fantastic footpaths back to base. Expect amazing views, challenging climbs and terrific trails along the dramatic cliffs.

Addition information: Achievable (and enjoyable) for everyone from relatively new trail runners through to more experienced off-roaders, this scenic 10km (6-mile) route is a brilliant way to see one of the South West's best trails. Minimum age 16.

SWOF Cheddar Challenge Trail Taster – 6km
Cost: £12–£14 (Affiliated/Unaffiliated)
Description: This 6km (4-mile) race takes place in the super scenic surrounds of Cheddar, where the route skirts the gorge before heading for home.

Addition information: Very achievable (and highly enjoyable) for everyone from new to intermediate trail runners, this scenic 6km (4-mile) route is an ideal transition event for those looking to push beyond 5km mark. Minimum age 14.

Description: A 3km (2-mile) race, perfect for those new to trail running, and juniors.
