Tasty autumn food events

Every autumn many of the places we look after host food events that give a real flavour of the season. From apple days to forages for fungi and other wild food in woods and hedgerows, our food events make the most of nature’s harvest.

Apple days and festivals 

Try your luck at apple bobbing, have a go using a traditional press and help pick the apples from the trees as we celebrate the annual apple harvest in the orchards we look after. Taste the different apple varieties and try local ciders at one of our events this autumn.

Cooking demonstrations 

Make the most of autumn’s bounty by cooking it yourself. Discover how cooks ensured they got the best flavours when using local, seasonal ingredients. Learn how to bake with freshly milled stone-ground flour or see Living History cooks bring our kitchens to life making delicious treats with seasonal produce from the gardens.

Farmers' markets 

If you know where to go, it’s easy to buy locally grown apples, pumpkins, potatoes and other seasonal food. We host many farmers’ markets and food festivals at our places where you can also taste and buy locally produced food like chutneys, fruit juices, cheeses.

Harvest time 

Why not harvest your own crop this year? Blackberries, sweet chestnuts, rosehips, sloes and much more are plentiful if you know where to look. If you’d like a bit of guidance, come along to one of our foraging walks to learn more about what to look out for and pick up some harvesting tips.

Seasonal menus 

Apples, pumpkins, pears and many more fruit and vegetables reach their prime in the autumn. We take pride in offering seasonal recipes on the menus at our cafes and restaurants with produce grown from our own kitchen gardens. Visit one of our gardens and sample the menu as the season changes.
