We use water everyday, without even thinking about it. We brush our teeth, boil the kettle, water plants and wash clothes. All of these little everyday tasks soon add up.

Did you know the average person in the UK uses 150 litres of water every day*? And once we’ve run this water, much of it is heated - around 30 per cent of the average household gas bill is spent on heating. 
By saving water you'll be saving energy, reducing your carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, and will be well on your way to living a cleaner, greener life.
Top tips
Here are our top tips on how you can waste less water:
  • Repair dripping taps - a dripping hot tap wastes energy from heating as well as up to 95 litres of water a day
  • Jug it - in summer keep jugs of cold water in the fridge for drinking instead of letting the tap run till the water is cool
  • Use a bowl of water for washing dishes and vegetables - running taps waste lots of water, so by using a bowl, you just run what you need
  • Fit a ‘hippo’ device to your toilet - place a plastic bottle filled with water in the cistern so that every flush uses less water - this can save around 1,460 litres of water a year for the average home
  • Keep your shower short - fit a four minute timer to remind teenagers - it will save money on heating gas too
  • Don’t leave the tap running - turning off the tap when you're cleaning your teeth will save five litres a minute
  • Wash the car - using a bucket and sponge rather than a hosepipe
  • Collect rainwater in a water butt for watering the garden - also water the garden in the cooler hours of the day or at night to prevent evaporation before your plants can use the water
  • Run a full load - always run washing machines and dishwashers with a full load and on the economy setting
  • Ask your water company to fit a free water meter - by measuring your consumption it is easier to reduce your consumption and you could well save money
