Winter at the foundry

Blacksmithing on St Clements Day, Finch Foundry, Devon

The foundry closes on 1 November, we open for one day only for St Clements Day. Every year, blacksmiths from all over the country come to Finch Foundry to celebrate St Clement, their patron saint and demonstrate their craft. They all take part in a competition to produce a particular piece of iron work in a set time, which is judged at the end of the day. There is also the Finch Foundry snail race, which takes place through the day.

The blacksmiths start off by enjoying a forge breakfast before they get to work.

Traditionally the anvil is fired and throughout the day you'll be able to see the blacksmiths at work and making their competition pieces - the foundry really is a hive of activity. You can see a variety of their work on display and for sale too.

There's a special one-day only Christmas shop where you can buy all your favourite National Trust goods and the work of some of our local crafts people. Come and have a browse and a mince pie and winter punch to complete the ambience of the day.
