Glamp at Cut Thorn Farm

A man cooking outside a yurt

There's nothing better than a good ole' adventure. Staying up to look at the stars, jumping into a cosy bed for some well-deserved shut-eye and waking up to the sounds of the birds singing. This is glamping at its best.

Glamping at West Wood Yurts offers a real back-to-basics experience without the need for packing everything in the car, including the kitchen sink.

Set within this grand Georgian estate, there are over 600 acres to explore. Venture into the woodland, discover nature and wildlife, enjoy the peace and quiet and have fun. There are also plenty of play areas for the little ones to choose from. There really is something for everyone.

Available from the middle of March to the end of October, there are six authentic Mongolian yurts each offering futon-style beds, cooking facilities, wood burning stoves, solar lighting and even solar-powered phone chargers.

The larger yurts sleep six, and the smaller ones sleep four, with each yurt costing from £119 for two nights (the price is per yurt, not per person). If you'd like to book a yurt, then please ring 07454 734369.

The yurts are at the 320-acre Cut Thorn Farm (once Gibside’s home farm), which tenant farmer Alastair's family have run since 1948.

While wandering the grounds you may see their livestock about the estate, including Short-horned cattle, which were first introduced to the estate in the 1800s by the 10th Earl of Strathmore. Today, they are bred for beef and sold at Gibside Market, which takes place every first and third Saturday of each month.

If you're booked in on a Friday and Saturday there may be time to venture to the family-friendly Gibside Pub for some real ale and wood-fired pizza. There are also family camping weekends at Gibside in May and August.
