About 1 Castle Cottage

1 Castle Cottage has been decorated in a comfortable style, blending the conveniences of modern day living with antique furniture in keeping with a traditional country cottage. This cottage is ideal for families and couples who want a holiday that’s got everything from history to nature.

Located to the west of the Great Tower of Tattershall Castle, just beyond the Castle’s outer moat, the cottage was originally a detached farmhouse dating back to the late 18th or early 19th century. The farmhouse was subdivided in the 1860s to provide dwellings for agricultural labourers. The castle, along with all its cottages and grounds were acquired in 1912 by Nathanial, Lord Curzon of Kedleston, who restored Tattersall Castle and bequeathed the entire estate to the National Trust upon his death in 1925.

Follow the entrance hall into the sitting room and through to the kitchen diner, where a back door leads you out into the grounds of Tattershall Castle. Downstairs there's also a shower room WC and basin. Upstairs there is a second bathroom and two bedrooms, a double and a twin, that overlook the garden. The garden is an enclosed lawn which wraps around the cottage, where you can relax and enjoy al fresco dining on the patio area.

When you stay here you can enjoy out-of-hours access to the ground of Tattershall Castle, giving you opportunity to explore without the crowds. Take a stroll around the grounds after dinner and immerse yourself in the history of this special place.

There’s plenty to see and do at Tattershall Castle, including walking trails around the Castle and along the nearby River Bain. The historic village of Tattershall is just a 10-minute walk away, where you can enjoy a meal out at one of the two pubs. The village, according to legend, also boasts the grave of Tom Thumb – a miniature folklore hero who was said to be just over 18 inches tall and lived to the age of 101. You can also find an impressive beam steam engine at Dogdyke Pumping Station and Just Wake Water Park, where you can try your hand at wake boarding and other water-based activities.

If you want to head further afield, the National Trust property of Gunby Hall is just a 30-minute drive away. Or you could spend the day in the city of Lincoln, where the cathedral, castle, museums and shops all wait to be explored. If you just want to get out and enjoy the great outdoors, there are acres of rolling green countryside on your doorstep and the delights of the Lincolnshire coast, including Skegness beach, are just a 45-minute drive away.

1 Castle Cottage is joined to 2 Castle Cottage (sleeps two). You can book both cottages for a group of up to six guests.
