Wilford is a second-floor apartment based in Tranmer House, on the Sutton Hoo estate. Inside it still has an elegant Edwardian interior but with a modern twist.  It was here that the famous archaeological dig was ordered during the 1930s, in which an Anglo-Saxon ship was discovered. You can see replicas of some of the royal treasures uncovered on display in the High Hall exhibition along with some original Anglo-Saxon objects unearthed at Sutton Hoo.

Walk around the 7th-century Royal Burial Ground before heading into the High Hall exhibition. Here, you can discover more about life in Anglo-Saxon England and who we think was buried here alongside high quality replica treasures and original Anglo-Saxon objects. The ground floor of Tranmer House is open as well. Here you can find out about the archaeological investigations which have taken place at Sutton Hoo and the people behind them.

You’ll be able to enjoy walks on the open heath and woodland of the estate and down to the River Deben. You can also learn more about the history of the estate at the burial grounds and High Hall exhibition and Tranmer House.

Beyond the Sutton Hoo estate, Rendlesham Forest is just a 15 minute drive from here. The Suffolk coast is also close, with Orford Ness National Nature Reserve a 20 minute drive. On this wild and remote shingle spit, you’ll discover an abundance of wildlife and fascinating 20th-century military history.
