High Lidmoor is a characterful 18th-century farmhouse with low beamed ceilings, barn doors and slate floors. This remote cottage is surrounded by moorland and has sweeping views over the Bransdale valley.
It’s the perfect base for walkers to explore the North York Moors with many routes crisscrossing the dale, including the Cleveland Way trail that picks up at the northern end of Cockayne Ridge. For road cyclists, the 44km Bransdale Loop passes nearby.
You’ll have free entry to National Trust places, including Nunnington Hall, a manor house on the banks of the River Rye with a gallery space of art exhibitions. Rievaulx Terrace is a landscape garden with wooded walk above the Rye Valley, overlooking the Cistercian ruin of Rievaulx Abbey, just 18 miles away.
The Yorkshire coast is about an hour’s drive away, with numerous beaches where fossil hunters search after winter storms. Explore Whitby, with its ruined gothic abbey and famous fish and chips, or head to the picturesque Robin Hood's Bay - a great place try rockpooling.
This quiet part of Yorkshire is dotted with small towns and villages. Helmsley is a popular market town with gift shops and tea-rooms, just 12 miles away, and Kirkbymoorside is a 15-minute drive away with cafés, an art gallery and several pubs. The city of York is an hour’s drive south.
