Keeping warm this winter

It’s nothing new to burn wood for heating, but technology today makes this far more efficient for your home. At the National Trust, we’re looking to use the wood grown on our estates for heating, so we can use less oil.

Wood pile and loader at Ickworth

Turning nature into energy at Ickworth

We’ve changed the way we heat some of the buildings at Ickworth. A new woodchip biomass boiler means we're eliminating the use of over 38,000 litres of heating oil, and saving over 100 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year.

Felbrigg gets warmth from the woods

Felbrigg Hall now has a greener heating system, following the installation of a biomass boiler that will be fuelled from wood chip, sustainably harvested from this National Trust Estate.

Keeping Sutton Hoo toasty

The Anglo-Saxons would have had little choice but to use wood fires to keep warm. So it seems appropriate that buildings at Sutton Hoo are now being heated with wood fuel in a slightly more high tech way, with the help of a pellet biomass boiler.

Blickling lake in winter

Blickling draws heat from the lake

Blickling's lake is teeming with wildlife, but now its importance has grown, as we use it to harness green energy thanks to the installation of the largest lake source heat pump in the National Trust.

" What’s great is that we’re not only reducing our environmental impact, but removing the risk of oil pollution in this wonderful environment."

Can Blickling help keep your home warm?

Keep the home fires burning with a sack of logs or woodchip from the Blickling Estate. Sacks are available from the plant centre. Alternatively you can order a truck load for £140 with free delivery within 10 miles (a small charge beyond that). It's all seasoned, cut and split hardwood ready for your fire.
