Spring walks in West Sussex

It must be Spring time. Twitching noses are edging from the burrow to smell their first spring. Hazel and willow catkins fidget in unruly hedgerows, like the lambs' tails in the fields they enclose. In woodlands, leaves are unfurling, tender and crumpled after the long sleep of winter. The leaf litter below is speckled with the stars of wood anemone and celandine, welcoming walkers drawn by warm weather. Come and see them. It’s a glorious thank you for your support, which allows us to maintain field edges for wildlife and woodlands for walkers and nature habitat. Here are our top walks all around the county to try this spring from the South Downs to Sheffield Park, Nymans to Petworth.

Bluebells in Nore Wood

This walk around Nore Hill Folly from The George Inn at Eartham is perfect for warm days in spring. There is a superb show of bluebells under ancient beech trees here from as early as mid-April.

Rotunda at Petworth
Walking trail

Welcome in the spring when a sea of wild daffodils covers the Pleasure Grounds at Petworth. This downloadable trail takes you on a walk through the grounds that Capability Brown designed. There are thousands of wild yellow primroses and magnolia trees with their fragrant flowers. Visit again later in the season when swathes of bluebells blanket the Pleasure Grounds.

Standen Rockinghill Wood Bluebells
Walking trail

Spring is a great time to discover the garden and woodlands at Standen. See the spring flowers begin to appear and the incredible display of bluebells in the woods.

Admire the blossom in the orchard then head out into the Sussex countryside on one of our trails. Experience the magic felt by Rudyard Kipling as he walked through woods and fields, surrounded by wildlife and woodland.
