Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, learn new skills or put your expertise to use in a different way. We’re looking for new volunteers to join the team as both tour guides and millers, particularly at weekends. As a volunteer, you’ll be able to get to grips with the story of Nether Alderley Mill from the sixteenth century right through to the present day, and have the opportunity to get hands on with working heritage machinery.

Volunteer as a Guide

We’re looking for friendly, engaging people with a passion for the past to join us as guides. Your role will be to inspire visitors with the story of Nether Alderley Mill. Beginning at the mill pond, you’ll trace the mill’s history from sixteenth century corn mill right through to the graffiti left on its walls when it was restored in the 1960s. Don’t worry about knowing everything in advance, there’ll be plenty of opportunities to shadow other guides and get to grips with the information.

Volunteer as a Miller

As a miller, you’ll be part of the team that maintains and cares for the waterwheels, milling stones and other machinery at Nether Alderley Mill. You’ll have the opportunity to demonstrate the machinery to visitors on guided tours, and explain more about how the corn milling process works. This role is perfect if you have an interest in industrial history and love getting hands-on.
