Inspired by the coast: One and All online and at Somerset House

Published : 06 Oct 2015 Last update : 11 Nov 2015

‘One and All: A voyage through sight, sound and sea,’ is our latest Trust New Art commission by three leading artists working across sound, poetry and art. This innovative digital project, which explores the powerful emotional and personal links we all have to seaside landscapes, is available to experience online and at an exhibition at Somerset House celebrating our year of the coast.

The artists

In collaboration with Sound UK, we invited sound artist Martyn Ware (founder of The Human League and Heaven 17), poet Owen Sheers and visual artist Tania Kovats to take inspiration from our Neptune Coastline Campaign to acquire and care for coastal land, which celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2015.
Martyn Ware’s 3D soundscape is woven with stories from the public captured in his portable beach hut this summer. After sunshine and storms, the hut now rests outside the exhibition at Somerset House on the River Terrace.
Tania Kovats’ work ‘Tide’ uses real-time data to create a digital drawing tracking the tide as it moves around mainland Britain. Her 12-kilo bronze bell, cast on Porthcurno Beach in Cornwall, will ring daily at high tide over the River Thames as part of the Somerset House exhibition.
Owen Sheers’ piece is a poem inspired by his residency on the Gower Peninsula this summer. Working in collaboration with film-maker Benjamin Wigley, the work will take visitors on an audio-visual journey along the stretch of coastline from Paviland Cave to Worms Head.

Exhibition at Somerset House

Set within a boardwalk, the unique and atmospheric staging of these digital artworks at Somerset House invites visitors to explore our relationship with the coast in the heart of London until 13 December 2015.

In collaboration with film-maker Benjamin Wigley, the exhibition features hand-processed films, large scale projections, 3D sound installations and Tania Kovats’ bell. The exhibition is free of charge and takes place in the River Rooms overlooking the Thames – entrance via the River Terrace.

One and All is a Trust New Art and Sound UK co-commission, and is produced by Sound UK in collaboration with The Swarm and artdocs. The project is supported by Arts Council England and PRS for Music Foundation. The Somerset House exhibition is supported by our official partner Panasonic.
