Tours to the top

A group on the top of Penshaw Monument

Have you ever wondered what that 'on top of the world' feeling is like?

Just so you know...

This article was created before the coronavirus crisis, and may not reflect the current situation. Please check our homepage for the most up to date information about visiting.

A tour to the top of Penshaw Monument is something else.

Head up the secret passage hidden within one of the pillars and stand on the top of this 70ft high monument to take in the views. They reach far across the North East and on a really clear day, over Wearside and County Durham.

The tours are lead by a small team of fantastic volunteers, so we can only permit five visitors at a time. Each tour runs for 15 minutes with slots available from 10am to 4.45pm and are free for National Trust members, and cost £6 each for non-members.

This historic structure has been a North East fixture since 1844 and has become a much-loved landmark, and while we love opening this special place up for everyone to enjoy, there are a couple of things to bear in mind.

As it's so old, there aren't any lights in the pillar to the top, making it extremley dark as it's such a small, enclosed space. With this in mind, please be prepared by wearing sensible clothing and footwear (it can be very windy up there!) and be ready to wear the safety equipment issued.

Unfortunately the tours aren't suitable for anyone under 1 metre tall and if you have a bag or rucksack with you, we will ask you to leave it at the bottom where a National Trust team member will look after it.

You can book your Tour to the Top online or call 0344 249 1895 (open five days a week, Monday to Friday 9am-5.30pm).

In the event of adverse weather, tours may be cancelled at short notice. If you've booked a tour and are unsure whether it will be going ahead, please call 07775 893778.
