Get crafty this Christmas with the National Trust
Christmas is a great time to unleash your creativity, and craft a few home-made treats and decorations. Get into the festive spirit this year by joining one of the National Trust’s food and craft workshops for Christmas 2017.
Families can choose from a variety of fun activities, from decorating gingerbread men to creating sparkly baubles.
There’s plenty on offer for adults too, with artisan workshops ranging from creating wreaths to decorating festive cakes. Every one of these workshops will help you take home something inspired by beautiful surroundings.
What’s more, every activity you try helps the National Trust to continue looking after special places for ever, for everyone.
Wreath making workshops
Get into the Christmas spirit at Hidcote by learning how to craft your very own festive wreath for your door or table. All materials will be provided, so you can let your creativity run wild in the two-hour workshop. For even more festive cheer why not add on a warming lunch in the café, or go all out and spend a full day at Hidcote, including special access to the shop and a guided tour of the gardens.

Nothing says 'Christmas is here' like putting a wreath on your front door. During this workshop you’ll learn how to use natural greenery and trimmings to create your own festive wreath, all under the guidance of a professional florist. You needn’t worry about getting peckish either, as a mince pie on arrival and light lunch are both included in the price.

Based in Knole’s beautifully restored seventeenth century hayloft, the new learning centre provides the perfect opportunity to develop a new hobby, learn a new skill or extend your knowledge. This modest red-brick building tucked away in a quiet corner of Hampshire houses an unexpected treasure – an epic series of large-scale murals by the acclaimed war artist Sir Stanley Spencer. The Chapel is still a place of creativity, with an exhibition area and regular craft workshops. The traditional Victorian decorations are always a highlight of Christmas at Speke Hall, especially the huge green leyandii and juniper garlands. If you’d like to craft your own mini version, the National Trust team are running a special workshop where you’ll learn how to make a fresh garland of your own, followed by festive refreshments to get you into the Christmas spirit. The garlands complete with trimmings and ribbon look beautiful hanging over the mantelpiece or draped over the door way, and will fill your home with the scent of Christmas.

East Riddlesden Hall, Yorkshire
The Great Barn dressing, 3 & 10 Dec, 11am – 12 noon & 1 – 2pm
The Great Barn at East Riddlesden is a 400-year-old testament to the craftsmen who worked incredibly hard to build the magnificent structure. It becomes even more magical at Christmas when the National Trust team decorate it for the festive season – but they need your help. Head along to one of the sessions to lend a hand making Christmas decorations – there’ll be something for the whole family to get stuck into. Warm clothing is a must!

Gingerbread decorating, 16–24 December, 11am – 3pm
It wouldn’t be Christmas without a tasty gingerbread treat. Cosy up by the fire in the Garden Café, and have a go at decorating your very own gingerbread man with edible icing during this drop-in craft session. Maybe you’ll dress him up as Santa Claus?
