Playing with the past

At Sutton House we have award-winning, cross-curricular workshops available for all Key Stages. Why not plan a trip for your school?

Our award-winning schools programme is led by experienced facilitators and theatre practioners. The cross-curricular workshops on offer allow schools to explore the house whilst being actively immersed in learning, with topics ranging from history, literacy, science and geography.

Our school offers include core workshops, seasonal offers, behavioural rewards and bespoke workshops. You can also use Sutton House's historical rooms and Wenlock Barn for performaces, music recitals and plays; teachers events; and as classroom space.

Core workshops

We have an extensive range of core workshops running throughout the year, our most popular workshops are:

Tudor rich and poor

KS1 and KS2Curriculum area: History, Local area study.

This award-winning workshop takes the children on a journey back to 1535, exploring through costume, role play and object handling how life was as a rich or poor Tudor.

Time travellers 

KS1 and KS2 Curriculum area: History beyond on 1066, Local area study,  Living together with the community, Homes then and now. Children go through time looking at all the people who have lived at Sutton House over 500 years, including a Tudor noble man, a silk merchant, victorian school children and squatters. The children have a chance to imagine what it was like live in Hackney then and discuss the importance of community and preserving heritage now. This workshops includes drama games, costume, role play and object handling.

Seasonal offer 

This summer, in a season called 'School of Anarchy', Sutton House is remembering a time when the community of Hackney ralied together and campaigned to save Sutton House from being turned into flats 30 years ago,

Our school offer includes a workshop about children's rights, and the opportunity to work with a professional artist to devop artwork about protesting and campaigning for issues the children feel strongly about. Their artworks will be included as part of the Sutton House School of Anarchy exhibition over the summer holidays. You can also bring your classes to experience our new Victorian School Workshops, experiencing what it was like to go to school 150 years ago.

26th June - 30th June is Spanish week, to celebrate we are offering the 'Raul the Rat' Musuem learning sessions all week developed by the Hackney Learning Trust.
