Caring for our paths

Volunteers repairing a Wasdale path

Did you know that many of the Wasdale paths have been around for hundreds, if not thousands of years? It may seem like the paths look after themselves, however they are under constant pressure from erosion.

Last year thousands of people visited Wasdale and all those walking boots combined with the Lake District weather means that erosion is a constant problem. Here are some spectacular figures, for Wasdale alone, to give you an idea of the scale of the work which is done in partnership with Fix the Fells:

  • In 2017 the Wasdale four-man team spent more than 400 days working on the local paths including the very popular Scafell Pike and Great Gable routes

  • The team covered more than 2200km - that is more than walking from Land's End to John O'Groats and back again.

  • The team covered 152km of ascent - the equivalent of climbing Everest 17 times.

  • The annual cost is £70,000

In the Wasdale area the team is made up of four but they are a part of a much larger team whose work is only made possible by the very able support provided by the lengthsmen, a group of volunteers from Fix the Fells.

We’re a charity and rely on donations and legacies to continue with this crucial work. Will you donate today and help us to look after Wasdale? Would you like to get involved and join the volunteer team protecting our spectacular fells?

In any case we look forward to seeing you out on the fells in 2018!
