Wasdale Volunteer Ranger - River Irt

Group of volunteers by the river bank

We're looking for someone to help the ranger team and West Cumbria Rivers Trust Officer with practical work such as vegetation control, fencing and survey work to keep the countryside in great condition and improve the River Irt and its tributaries

What's involved?

The River Irt flows out of Wastwater and joins the sea at Ravenglass, along the way passing Nether Wasdale, Santon Bridge and Holmrook. The River Irt was once home to a thriving population of Freshwater Mussels. Unfortunately, this endangered species is now no longer thriving and is under grave threat of being lost from the River Irt due to habitat degradation. To help prevent this from happening we shall be improving habitats and working with farms to improve the river.

This role suits you if you are...

someone who loves being outdoors in all weathers and also has a reasonable level of fitness. You don’t need to be Bear Grylls but you’ll do a lot of walking and practical tasks!

By getting involved you could...

feel the wind in your hair, and get a tan without trying. Help look after important landscapes and species for future generations, and use your passion for the outdoors and share your knowledge with visitors. Working alongside passionate countryside management professionals, learning skills along the way, you'll join a friendly and varied team and make some new friends.

Ready to get involved?
