The hall was saved by the support of the local community in the form of a preservation committee in the 1930’s and then restored in the 1950’s. Today we are supported by the Friends of Washington Old Hall and dedicated volunteers, making it a vibrant and interesting place to be.
Daughters of the American Revolution
We’re very lucky to receive the international support of the DAR Washington Old Hall Chapter
. Their generous financial contributions and tireless promotion is invaluable to us.

The Friends of Washington Old Hall
We are an independent registered charity formed in 1986 whose objectives are to promote the preservation of Washington Old Hall by raising funds to improve visitor facilities and to enhance the quality of the hall’s immediate surroundings. We have an established programme of events and raise funds throughout the year. Newcomers are always welcome to get involved.
We actively raise income through tearoom sales, bric a brac sales, village walks, events and education activities. Since 2008 we have raised more than £20,000 on bric a brac alone.
We have supported many projects which have improved access and visitor enjoyment.
Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, garden paths were renewed and improved and an outdoor lift installed in the garden making all the gardens fully accessible.
Purchased in 1988, and later planted with avenues of nut trees including hazels and almonds. Now a popular haven for wildlife and visitors.
We contributed to the purchase and conversion of Orchard House, creating a much needed education space.
Our current project is Nature on Your Doorstep. We're working to imporve the enviroment for local nature and consrve what we already have to ensure we stay the best home for our wildlife. Find out more about the project by heading over to the Nature at Washington Hall article listed below.
We host various events throughout the year including 4th July Flag Raising Ceremony in partnership with the City of Sunderland and local schools, Conservation Open Day and the Summer Garden Party.
The Social Side
We offer many opportunities to get involved with social events throughout the year including Christmas dinner, George Washington's Birthday and a summer barbeque.
