Join Wordsworth House’s friendly volunteer team

Around 80 volunteers donate their time and energy to help make William Wordsworth’s childhood home the vibrant, special place it is today – and we’re looking for more to join them.

If you like meeting people and have a few hours a week or fortnight to spare, why not get in touch about becoming part of our friendly team?

If you’re retired or recently moved to the Cockermouth area, it’s a great way to meet interesting new people.

And if you’re looking to return to paid employment, transfer into the heritage sector or get some broad-based work experience, volunteering at Wordsworth House and Garden will be an invaluable addition to your CV.

Visitor experience manager Zoe Gilbert said: “As a charity, we’re entirely dependent on the generosity of our members and supporters for everything we do.

“We wouldn’t be able to open the doors each day without our wonderful volunteers to welcome and chat to visitors, lead tours, assist in the café and garden, and ensure everyone has the best possible visit.”

You don’t need any special knowledge or abilities as we provide full training and support.

Zoe explained: “We’re looking for people with a warm, friendly manner. You don’t have to be a history buff or poetry expert, although either would be a bonus. If you are a pianist and would like to play our harpsichord that would be great too.”

Opportunities

We have vacancies for people of all ages and interests to:

  • Welcome and orientate our visitors
  • Help them enjoy our special exhibitions
  • Lead 30-minute house taster tours
  • Play our replica harpsichord
  • Act as room guides and chat about the house and its occupants
  • Serve and clear tables in our café

If you could spare a few hours on a weekly – or less regular – basis, email wordsworthhouse@nationaltrust.org.uk or call us on 01900 824805.
