Step back in time at Wordsworth House and Garden

Costumed servants working in the kitchen at Wordsworth House

Whether you meet the maid-of-all-work or a knowledgeable 21st-century guide, you’re guaranteed a warm welcome at William’s childhood home.

Explore the working 18th-century kitchen and other hands-on rooms at your own pace, or take in a guided or audio tour – or join a talk – to find out more about the happiness and heartache that shaped the original wild child.

Our term-time programme includes house tours (Monday and Thursday) and costumed servant talks (Wednesday and Saturday). Families can follow a trail or turn detective with an Explorer Bag.

During school holidays, there are daily family activities, including special trails, storytelling and art and craft sessions.

Household ghosts

There’s replica costume to dress up in, reproduction toys to play with – and the household’s ghosts are waiting in the cellar to share their stories.

Relax in the garden that inspired William’s love of the natural world, listen to his poetry in the summerhouse, enjoy a free cuppa and homemade scone in the cosy discovery room refreshment area, then browse for souvenirs in the gift shop.
