Aberconwy House

This is the only medieval merchant's house in Conwy to have survived the turbulent history of the walled town over nearly six centuries. Aberconwy House is the oldest, secular domestic building in Wales. With timbers dating back to 1417, it was initially a Medieval traders house (or warehouse). Since then it has had a long history of trade, with Evan David selling produce from his Benarth farm there in the 1600s and Captain Samuel Williams selling goods such as slate, copper and lead in the 1800s. By the turn of the 20th Century it was a Temperance Hotel run by Jane and William Jones who offered a safe and quiet alternative to the rowdier pubs and inns of Conwy at the time. After running as an antique shop for a number of years it eventually fell into a state of disrepair. To save it from being dismantled and shipped to the USA it was bought by Alexander Campbell-Blair from Llandudno who bequeathed it to the National Trust in 1934.
