Little terns are beautiful, graceful birds that can be found on some British coastlines in the summer. They are the UK’s smallest tern and at around 50g they are similar in weight to a tennis ball.  They are identifiable by their yellow beak with black tip and black cap with triangular white patch on the forehead. Each year these birds return from Africa to Britain to breed, with currently about 1,200 breeding pairs in the UK. They are noisy birds with a chattering call, and dive for small fish both for food and to present in their courtship displays.
