Behind the scenes tours at Claydon

Conservator cleaning a picture frame

Ever wondered what happens when Claydon’s doors close for winter? Come on a guided tour to meet the conservation team and discover how they look after this special place and all the objects inside – you’ll even get the chance to have a go yourself.

From portraits to chairs and even a couple of musical instruments, there is plenty that needs cleaning at Claydon. Discover how doors are brushed, books are dusted and why it takes so long to clean the windows.

As you go around the house you'll see items in their dust sheets and even get a sneeky peak at the conservation store and the items not currently on display.

Why clean?

Claydon was built in 1757 and is still here today. To keep this special place going we need to keep the collection safe. Winter is the perfect opportunity to closely examine the collection for signs of wear, pest activity and to update records.

How do I get involved

There’s no need to book, just pop into reception before your chosen tour to collect your ticket. Places are given on a first come first served basis.
