Five second-hand bookshops to visit in the South West

To celebrate all things books, we’re shining a light on five second-hand bookshops you’ll find tucked away at our places. They’re well worth popping in to to say hello to the wonderful volunteers, or to browse through the shelves stocked with donated books. Every time you visit or donate your preloved books to a Trust charity bookshop, you help to support conservation at that special place. Thanks to supporters like you, the bookshops take thousands of pounds annually, and every penny is invested to keep the property special for everyone, for ever.

The bookshop at Trelissick, Cornwall

Trelissick, Cornwall

Trelissick’s bookshop is one of the biggest and most successful in the Trust, and it’s easy to see why. Step through the roses around the door and you’ll find four rooms filled with a large selection of rare and antiquarian to non-fiction, fiction and children's books. The shop regularly has collectors’ items and sets. It’s a popular place, and book donations come in from across Cornwall, so the shelves are updated nice and regularly. It’s run by an award-winning volunteer team, who are dedicated to making the bookshop a special place for all. The bookshop brings in an astounding £60,000 directly for conservation.

A volunteer places books on the shelf at Tyntesfield, near Bristol

Tyntesfield, Somerset

An army of 24 volunteers are at the heart of Tyntesfield's bookshop, who thoughtfully hand select and hand write recommendations from the generous book donations. Special interest and high value books are often available. The bookshop brings in over £24,000 a year to care for Tyntesfield.

Killerton's second hand bookshop in Devon

Killerton, Devon

In the stable block, you’ll find the bookshop that stocks a great choice of books. Why not pick up a book and head for a coffee in the Stables café next door. Run by a lovely volunteer team, the bookshop raises £20,000 a year towards conservation. This year, every penny raised is going towards caring for Killerton House’s most important collections. Donations of art, history, fiction, classical literature and children’s books are always welcome.

Pop into the bookbarn at Barrington Court, Somerset

Barrington Court, Somerset

The bookbarn, run by warm and knowledgeable volunteers, is brimming with pre-loved books of all genres. It has recently had a bit of a refurb and it’s the perfect place to take some time out. Pull up a comfy armchair and enjoy the tranquillity of the barn while you decide which specialist novel or bestseller to take home. Every purchase helps the bookshop raise around £19,000 a year for conservation work at Barrington Court.

The second hand bookshop at Stourhead, Wiltshire

Stourhead, Wiltshire

Tucked away in the Old Granary, Stourhead's bookshop is well worth searching for. It was originally set up by three dedicated volunteers who saw the opportunity to turn their passion into raising funds for conservation. Currently the growing bookshop makes over £5000 a year for projects. Everything inside is donated by the community, including all books and the tables, chairs and shelves. Seasonally changing displays and a friendly welcome awaits.

" Second hand bookshops are a crucial source of fundraised income and every penny they raise stays at that property to be spent on vital conservation work. Last year, the bookshops collectively raised over £250,000 in the South West. A big thank you to all our bookshop supporters, whether you buy a book or drop off your preloved books, you really help us care for special places."
