Things to see and do at Rayleigh Mount

Two girls running down the grassy slope at Rayleigh Mount

A historic oasis in an urban landscape, Rayleigh Mount hides away in the heart of Rayleigh, a green lung in a busy Essex town.

Visit us

The mount is the remains of a Norman Motte and Bailey Castle built on a natural ridge commanding amazing views. Providing a tranquil refuge from the hustle and bustle of modern life, the daily hubbub in the air disappears to be replaced by birdsong.

Guided walks

Discover the history of Rayleigh on Saturdays, 3pm, April to September. Join us for a one to two hour walk. Suitable for all abilities (£2 per person). For details, please contact

Outdoor theatre

Look out for our open-air performances at Rayleigh Mount and enjoy the atmosphere. Why not bring a picnic, sit back, relax and enjoy.

Scale the ramparts

Explore the remnants of a Norman Motte and Bailey Castle. Originally built out of wood, the motte and inner bailey buildings are long gone but the site and views are still just as atmospheric.

Walk on the wild side

Rayleigh Mount could almost be a set for Sleeping Beauty with nature taking over where soldiers once trained. It's a green oasis where you can discover wildlife living in the heart of this busy town.
