Christmas with a twist at Red House
WASSAIL! Enjoy a medieval Christmas this year at Red House. From Olde Father Christmas to an orchard Wassail, we have something for everyone this festive period. Red House is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday until the 17 December. Come and explore the house or join one of our festive events.
Dressed for Christmas
From 24th November
Red House will be bedecked in its Christmas finery. Just as Morris would have had it, the house will be hung with garlands of dried hops, lavender will scent the air, and a giant Christmas tree decorated with dried fruits and popcorn tinsel will welcome you as you enter the house. A traditional kissing bough hangs at the bottom of the stair, twisted with willow and ivy with sprigs of mistletoe at its centre.
Olde Father Christmas
Sat 25 & Sun 26 November, £4
Green Father Christmas joins us once again to tell tales of Christmas past, bang his stick and shout ‘Wassail!’ Entertainment for young and old alike, children will be presented with a wooden gift at the end.
Red House Wassail!
Sat 9 & Sat 16 December, 1:30 – 4:30pm, £12.50
Reviving the ancient tradition of wassailing, join the Glam Hatters in making your own wassail crown out of flowers & leaves, and follow the wassail at 3pm. Take a procession round the orchard, making as much noise as possible to scare away the evil spirits, and give the apple trees a glug of cider to encourage a year of good growth. Finish off with a hot mulled cider and mince pies in the café.
An evening of Medieval Music with Cancionero
Sat 9 December 7-9pm, £15
William Morris loved all things medieval, and Cancionero bring this to life with an evening of medieval tunes and traditional carols. Playing medieval instruments and dressed to match, join this lively duo, sing along and explore the house by candlelight; hot mulled cider and mince pie in hand!
