Kick Off at Souter

Project
A personalised football with the words

Kick Off has been devised by artists YARA+DAVINA as a genuinely collaborative project. Local community involvement at each step will shape what its outcome looks like. This is where you can follow the journey at Souter.

Community groups have been invited to join weekly workshops between March and June 2020 to work alongside expert creatives (poet, knitter, graphic designer and chef). The look, sound and even taste of the home and away matches at Souter and Osterley in July will have a brand new, uniquely local flavour.

YARA+DAVINA developed the idea for Kick Off when researching the history of female football during WWI, and its connections with the suffragette movement, in relation to Souter.

" Football has an extraordinary power to bring people together, even in the most challenging times. . . . Drawing inspiration from the Lionesses’ World Cup success and using football as a familiar entry point, Kick Off will engage with wider issues of equality, inclusivity and health. "

First scarf design workshop

Jenny Baker, designer and lecturer in textiles, and artist Davina welcomed members of Arts4Wellbeing and Women’s Health in South Tyneside. Experienced knitters supported beginners, and Jenny gave everyone a go on her knitting machine. Symbolism and origins of football scarves were explored e.g. showing team loyalty, match souvenirs. Originally knitted by mums and grandmas to keep spectators warm, player or team names were stitched on later. Clubs noticed, and in the mid-20th century started making and selling scarves.

First football chant workshop

Poet, author and performer Kate Fox led the workshop, attended by a group from South Shields based Arts4Wellbeing. Ice breaker exercises introduced the group to rhyming couplets and the idea that football chants are like poetry and vice versa. They listened to Sunderland AFC chants then wrote a chant about themselves and each other based on something they like about themselves such as being kind, artistic, or clever. Another workshop follows.
