Walking trail

An easy autumnal stroll for all the family across well-established limestone footpaths.

Start your walk from Souter Lighthouse and end at Rocket Green meadow; home to autumn gentian, bee orchid and dropwort.

Start at the lighthouse itself and make your way toward the foghorn at the bottom of Foghorn Field. Exit through the green gate behind the foghorn.


Follow the coastal path nearest to the cliffs southwards with the sea on your left.

Walk past our pond and make your way to point 4. Here you will find our birdwatching hut. Feel free to use the hut to gaze at the many species of birds we have on our land at this time of year.


Walk back along the other coastal path as marked on the map.

Go down to the wherry. Here you can take a look at our stunning sea views and maybe skim a few stones.


Go back to the coastal path and walk north to the lighthouse.


Walk up the bank and to the green gate at the south of the lighthouse.


Turn left and make your way to the front of the lighthouse. Here you will find our tea-room, where you can relax with a hot drink.

By train

East Boldon and South Shields (Tyne and Wear Metro) both 3 miles (5km).

By road

On A183 coast road.

By ferry

Shields Ferry crosses River Tyne from North Shields to South Shields twice hourly.

By bus

E1, E2 and E6 from Sunderland and South Shields either pass by lighthouse or close by.

By bicycle

National Cycle Network Route 1, adjacent to property.
