Home to one of the most significant breeding seabird colonies in the UK, the Farne Islands, situated off the Northumberland Coast, have long been a sanctuary for nature and people. Thanks to your support, we've been caring for them for the last 100 years, but due to a changing climate, we need your help to continue to look after them.
A National Nature Reserve (NNR) and Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), during the summer months the islands play host to 200,000 seabirds of 23 different species, whilst in autumn, more than 2,000 grey seal pups are born on the pupping grounds.
With a fascinating history dating from the earliest days of St Cuthbert in the late 6th Century, the islands’ rugged landscape and abundant wildlife have attracted people for centuries, resulting in tales of saints, stewards and heroines of international and national significance.
The Farne Islands welcome thousands of visitors each year who come to explore and get closer to nature. As the climate and the ecosystems that shape the islands change, your support will help us learn more about the reserve and protect its wildlife.
A team of rangers and volunteers work in the Farnes Islands year-round, carrying out vital conservation work to support the species that live there. They ensure visitors have a positive experience and undertake important research about the health of marine ecosystems.
Your donation will help protect these important species by ensuring the annual seal and puffins surveys can continue and the habitats where they live are looked after. We'll also maintain boardwalks and jetties and continue to bring to life the stories of the people and events connected to these islands.
