Enjoy the great outdoors at The Kymin

The Round House with trees at The Kymin, Monmouth, Wales

Spectacular views, picturesque pleasure grounds and a beautiful woodland walk all conspire to make The Kymin, near Monmouth, a wonderful place to while away a few hours.

Picnicking paradise

The Kymin was both inspired by and created for picnics more than 200-years-ago when a group of local gentlemen formed a picnic club and visited The Kymin every Tuesday.

Their desire to be able to continue to hold their picnics whatever the weather led to the building of the Round House, and the pleasure grounds soon followed.

Today The Kymin continues to be the perfect spot to lay a blanket and indulge in a cake.

The great outdoors

The Kymin is a special place for many reasons, not least for the far-reaching views. Indeed, this was one of the reasons the gentlemen of the Kymin Club favoured this spot and decided to build the Round House right on the summit of the 245m (800ft) hill.

On a clear day you can enjoy panoramic views down the Wye Valley, up into the Brecon Beacons and across to the Malvern Hills. See if you can spot Pen-y-Fan – southern Britain’s highest mountain.

The views of this wonderful landscape make an ideal start and end point for a relaxing and tranquil wander around Beaulieu Woods, which are part of the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Games on the lawn

As the name implies, the bowling green and other pleasure grounds have been used for games since their creation, and today we continue that tradition.

You can hire various lawn games at the Round House, including giant darts, giant Jenga, Viking Kubb and croquet.

The grounds at The Kymin are open and free of charge every day of the year. You can hire your choice of lawn games when the Round House is open between March and October.
